A model for accurately predicting the aerodynamic performance of a critical aircraft component could lead to more efficient and greener airplanes in the near future.

Aerofoils – which include wings, fins, propeller blades and helicopter rotor blades – are the surfaces that enable an aircraft to fly. On a typical airplane, the aerofoil’s shape is designed to take advantage of the positive lifting action from air passing around the wing.

The plane goes up if the forces of lift and thrust are more than gravity and drag – the force that resists movement of an aircraft through the air.

The wing contributes one third of the total drag of an aircraft”, explains MONNALISA project coordinator Franco Auteri from Milan Polytechnic in Italy. “Optimising the shape of the wing is therefore critical to aircraft performance, through being able to reduce drag”.

Less drag means less fuel burned, and less CO2 and other pollutants emitted into the atmosphere.

Similar reasoning also applies to the tail. While the surface of the tail is smaller, achieving optimal performance can also contribute to operational efficiencies.

MONNALISA: wind-tunnel test campaign successfully completed on September 29th

An extensive test campaign in two entries has been carried out within the MONNALISA project to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of several swept wings with different geometries. The effect of the sweep angle, taper ratio and leading-edge shapes have been evaluated in the campaign. Force and moment measurements have been performed together with IR thermographies to locate the transition line, PIV measurements and china clay surface visualisations. This movie reports the first W/T entry.

Abstract
Multi-fidelity regression models bring substantial advantages to the aircraft preliminary design phase, when data from computer simulations and preliminary experimental tests are exploited to define the best feasible configuration. In the multi-fidelity approach to the modeling issue, pieces of information of diverse fidelity and complexity are leveraged concurrently, to improve estimate accuracy and to reduce the burden associated to parametrization. In such setting, it is fundamental to establish the correct hierarchy in terms of data credibility w.r.t. the targeted application. Unfortunately, the complexity challenging aerospace design problems generally makes the direct estimation of data fidelity difficult, if not intractable. Therefore, the fidelity hierarchy is often established according to a hypotheses-driven process, hence leaving ground to modeling biases. We aim at developing an agnostic multi-fidelity regression framework robust to possible modeling biases due to a corrupted Modeler’s prior belief concerning the alleged fidelity of the available data sets. In particular, we focus on multi-fidelity co-kriging methods, proposing an extended formulation capable of mitigating the drawbacks of an ill-chosen fidelity hierarchy.

Multi-fidelity modelling methods leverage on the concatenation of data sets presenting enormous diversity in terms of information, size, and behavior. Pieces of information of diverse fidelity and complexity complement each other, leading to improved estimate accuracy. Multi-fidelity regression models bring clear advantages to the aircraft preliminary design phase, when data from computer simulations and preliminary experimental tests are exploited to define the best feasible configuration.
In a multi-fidelity setting, it is fundamental to establish the correct hierarchy in terms of data credibility w.r.t. the reality of interest. Unfortunately, the complexity characterizing aerospace applications generally makes the direct estimation of data fidelity difficult, if not intractable, leaving ground to modeling biases.
In this lecture, we focus on multi-fidelity co-kriging methods, developing an agnostic framework robust to prior modeling biases concerning the alleged fidelity of the available data sets.
It will be shown that this capability is particularly relevant whenever the Modeler does not select the appropriate ordering for the sequential construction of the multi-level surrogate. Moreover, we will show how the proposed formulation can also be exploited to obtain invaluable insights about the physics underlying the reality of interest.
Eventually, we also provide perspectives concerning the future deployment of the proposed methodology, with particular reference to Bayesian optimization methods and to the efficient construction of databases.

On Saturday September 11th in POLIMI’s labs, we welcomed families and young aeronautics enthusiasts, for a total of approximately 75 people, for a day long demonstration of how aviation impact can be reduced by improving the aerodynamic performance of commercial aircraft  by mixing data coming from numerical calculations and experiments in a controlled way through Uncertainty Quantification.
